sulfur-bellied flycatcher mingus
1. dena greenwood found a SULFUR-BELLIED FLYCATCHER up on the mingus mts on wednesday - see her note below.
2. nanette & i have relatives here so did not get up to the mingus until today. 3. not surprisingly we did NOT find dena's sulfur-bellied flycatcher, but we tried. 4. we did find our 1st yavapai county RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH though! Rich Armstrong 928-282-3675 Checking with Carl Tomoff (Yavapai County Recorder) he said it was the first recording ever of a Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher on Mingus Mt. Previously seen in the Bradshaw Mts. and Oak Creek Canyon (actually nested a few years at the confluence of West Fork and Oak Creek). So this was a very far north recording for this species. Directions: Go to the summit of Mingus Mt., turn lft. at the Mingus Mt. Recreation parking lot. Follow road all the way back, just past Methodist Church camp there is a sign on right side of road that says "Gaddes Canyon Trailhead" Turn rt. Drive (1/4 mi. - or less) until you see trailhead sign on left. Park and follow trail in about 1/4 mi. (just past cattle gate - you have to physically open the wire gate). A little ways in on the right, atop of a tall ponderosa is where he was sitting. Not singing. Good luck, Dena |
