Holbrook (Lucy's Warbler, Scaled Quail); Heber
Yesterday afternoon (8/18/2012) I stopped to bird at locations off Golf Course Rd. (exit 283 off I-40) in Holbrook. At the tamarisk seep just southeast of the wastewater ponds I found a LUCY'S WARBLER, the first I've ever had in the fall in northern AZ. A few years ago this species was found nesting at Canyon de Chelly and may now nest at other Rez locations on the Colorado Plateau, so I presume that this bird would pertain to that population. At the wastewater ponds I heard one SORA calling and spotted some distant sandpipers that went unidentified. At the abandoned tree farm behind the golf course I heard at least one SCALED QUAIL in the understory vegetation and flushed a few BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERONS. The Russian-olives currently are loaded with fruit, which is already attracting the migrants. At the reservoir behind the golf course I had 150+ WILSON'S PHALAROPES and 40+ WHITE-FACED IBISES (or at least Plegadis ibis; the wind made it hard to scope them for possible glossy ibis). Note that to access the agricultural fields, tree farm, reservoir, and petroglyph site behind Hidden Cove Golf Course, you must contact Mike O'Dell with the City of Holbrook for permission (his number is 928-524-6225).

Today (8/19/2012) at my family's yard in Heber we had several warblers foraging in our tall sunflower patch and adjacent shrubs, including 2-3 YELLOW WARBLERS, 2-3 VIRGINIA'S WARBLERS, 1 MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER, 1 BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER, and 1-2 ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS. We also had a brief fly-by WESTERN SCRUB-JAY and an immature WESTERN TANAGER, along with several RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS still viciously defending the feeders and flowers. My dad told me that for the last couple of months at least one ACORN WOODPECKER has been making almost daily appearances in the yard.
