Two Gulls on Country Club Pond on the Golf Course
Others need to to check them out. I was getting California and Herring Gull field marks mixed up. Both birds seemed the same size overall, even their bills. But I was seeing a red spot on lower mandible of one, and I think a little black with the red on the other. One bird took off from the water, I noted pink legs. When I looked that up and found that a Herring field mark, I started second guessing myself. It landed again on the pond. Also, the eyes seemed dark, but when turned east and I viewed on the sunny side, they seemed light colored. Just the sunlight? But the bills didn’t seem massive enough for Herring Gulls. I’ve been away from the east coast too long to be sure out here! Better ID's are needed.

Also, up on Lake Elaine, there were 3 Common Goldeneye (1 female, 2 males) among other waterfowl.

I wish I had checked the website a bit earlier this morning. I checked the Country Club pond, Walnut Canyon Road ponds, Lake Elaine and few others and found no sign of the gulls around 11:00 am. I assume from Zack's description that these were adult birds and almost certainly they were California or Herring gulls. California Gull is the more likely of the two species in the Flagstaff area but either species is very interesting in December. Hopefully they will turn up again. The female Hooded Mergansers were still on the Country Club Road pond.
