Elden Spring - Fall migrants arrive, early Nashville Warbler
Late summer is my favorite time at Elden Spring, and today did not disappoint - fall migration seems to be off with a bang. Walking to the spring this morning I encountered a large mixed flock with 50+ birds working along the Pipeline Trail. The first three species I saw were Red-faced Warbler (1), Brown Creeper (2), and Nashville Warbler (1 female, pics below) - a pretty odd trio! The flock also contained Orange-crowned (1), Black-throated Gray (1), Virginia's (several), and Yellow-rumped Warblers (1), as well as Plumbeous (several) and Warbling Vireos (1), and many nuthatches (mostly White-breasted and Pygmy, but 1 Red-breasted heard) and chickadees. Throughout the area flycatcher numbers have increased. I saw numerous Western Wood-Pewees, 1 calling Cordilleran and 2 silent "Western" Flycatchers, 1 Dusky Flycatcher, 1 Gray Flycatcher, and a couple additional unidentified Empids. Cooper's Hawk and Peregrine Falcon both made appearances. Canyon and House Wrens were vocal. Full species list below.

Nashville Warbler (female, uncooperative):

Dusky Flycatcher (silent, no tail flicking, correct me if this looks wrong!):

Peregrine Falcon:

Jason, that empid has me wondering about Willow. the bill seems heavy, and while the underside is dark, it has some yellowish-orange tones to it. minimal eye ring and white throat are the other things making me wonder.

Here's a couple more photos showing slightly different perspectives on the bird. WIFL would be a new bird for the Elden Spring checklist. Too bad this bird was silent!

What do these shots make you think, Brian? Any other opinions?

Whew! I just don't know. It sure looks like the bird I saw recently at Kachina Wetlands which I decided was a Willow. The largish heavy dark bill, the whitish throat, the lack of eye-ring, the yellowish tummy. It sure does confound. The bill made me think Eastern Phoebe but the committee inside my head settled on Willow.
