Gila Co./Pine Cr. Canyon: Pacific Wren/Evening Grosbeaks, etc.
Hello birders,

I birded in Pine Cr. Canyon near Pine Sunday morning. Despite cool temps in the 40s, bird activity was good. Highlights during the 3.5 hour hike included a Pacific Wren and about 20 Evening Grosbeaks. Doing some owl imitations and pishing helped bring in four Golden-crowned Kinglets in a large mixed flock that included two Olive Warblers. Along the creek were lots of juncos, a surprising Lincoln's Sparrow, and a Sharp-shinned Hawk.

On the way up to Pine Saturday I stopped at Sunflower and birded with John Saba for about 2 hours. Highlights there were the many thrush species attracted to the One-seed Juniper berries. Included among these were Mountain and Western Bluebirds, and many American Robins. John noted a juv. Pyrrhuloxia and a group of Cedar Waxwings.

Good Birding,
Brian Ison

Is this an unusual spot for wintering Olive Warblers?

Hi Jason,

I would say Olive Warblers are uncommon to rare in winter in Pine and other areas just below the Mogollon Rim. Apparently, most Olive Warblers migrate south of Arizona but small numbers remain in winter just below the Rim. During the breeding season I have not detected any in Pine Cr. Canyon, but have found them just above the Rim; so maybe there is a less migratory population in this part of their range.

Cheers,
Brian

Thanks, Brian. I've been surprised by wintering Olive Warblers farther south in AZ, but didn't realize they could be found wintering in the vicinity of the Mogollon Rim.
