Cameron & Rimmy Jim: Red-eyed Vireo, Northern Waterthrush, other good birds
This morning Chuck LaRue and I drove north to Cameron to catch the tail end of migration and to look for early-summer vagrants. We were not disappointed.

At a cottonwood bosque about 4 miles upstream from Cameron one of the first birds we detected was a RED-EYED VIREO. This was in nearly the same spot that Chuck found this species a few weeks ago, and we speculate must be the same bird. The bird gave unobstructed views in good light, but unfortunately disappeared into the cottonwood canopy (and could not be re-found) before I could get a picture. Both Chuck and I noted the bold face pattern, with a gray crown bordered by a dark line above the eye and both were struck by the fact that it was easy to see that the bird did, in fact, have red eyes.

Other birds in the bosque included nearly 2 dozen Phainapeplas eating New Mexico Olive, 1 Swainson's Thrush, and an incredibly confiding Great Horned Owl. On the walk out of the bosque we found a Bendire's Thrasher.

At the Cameron Trading Post the highlight was an Indigo Bunting in the mulberry tree.

At Tappan Spring there were few birds, but we did flush a Great Horned Owl.

At Rimmy Jim Tank we were stumped for a while by a very drab thrush, which we eventually determined to be a very late migrant Hermit Thrush. Even more surprising was an exceptionally late Northern Waterthrush working the water edge. A young Leopard Lizard was also a cool find.
