Bubbling Ponds - Page Springs Fish Hatchery
I took my visiting Connecticut sister Mary Anne for a late afternoon walk around the Black Hawk Trail. Despite the breezes we saw 20 species. Great Blue Herons were on the ground or flying everywhere; I stopped counting after 15. She loved a close view of a brilliant male Western Tanager foraging on the ground and weeds. Turkey Vultures increased during our walk with up to 20+ circling. When one swoop in low over us at the fish ponds, 7 male Red-winged Blackbirds changed their usual tune to loud buzzing call I've not heard before - turned out the low soaring bird was a Zone-tailed Hawk. Other notables: Black Hawk, Blue Grosbeak, Summer Tanager.
