Tennessee warbler - Page Springs Fish Hatchery
Tom Linda and I decided to bird Page Springs Fish Hatchery this morning.  While we were birding the area on the eastern side of the river (by the show pond and hatchery buildings), we located what we think is a first fall (now SY) Tennessee warbler.  The bird was along the river, just downstream from the hatchery buildings near where a big drainage ditch crosses the trail.  The white undertail coverts were really obvious when we first saw it.  We watched it forage for a few minutes in the sycamores before it moved downstream.

On the way back, we checked a second time at the outflow stream from Bubbling Ponds and were able to find the Louisiana waterthrush (which showed briefly along the fence).

Anne and I puzzled over this one until it flashed its white undertail coverts; it was a done deal after that. I was totally thrilled to finally see this bird in Arizona after a 25 year search.

1. a group of 6 of us this morning did find tom's TENNESSEE WARBLER at the fish hatchery this morning, behind the center of the big hatchery building.
2. thank goodness tom linda is a much better birder than we are as i think i would have just called it an orange-crowned and moved on. it looks like an orange-crowned with white undertail coverts.
3. the LOUISIANA WATERTHRUSH was seen in it's normal area .
4. the female GREATER SCAUP was in the back left of the 4 back right ponds.

Tom Hedwall, Ron Auler and I had a pretty nice day of birding Page Springs this morning. We located the Tennessee Warbler (with Sam Houghs info) at the traditional location along the creek behind the hatchery building).

We then located the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker at the previously posted location. Easy to ID, immature bird, dusky overall no red anywhere on the head.

Finally, we found the Louisiana Waterthrush fairly quickly, much to the chagrin of birders that had looked for hours and had left.

We didn't find the Greater Scaup, although I saw what I thought was the bird that took off shortly after I got a glass on it.

A fine day of bird watching.

One other interesting development at Page Springs...there are now 2 Common Blackhawks present.

I struck out on the rarities, but there were a lot of other nice birds around.

Tom is right, it was a great morning of birding!
