early Lucy's Warblers, Lees Ferry
This morning, 10 March 2017, there were 2 Lucy's Warblers at Lonely Dell Ranch at Lees Ferry, and another one at the lower end of Paria Beach. Most of my notes from the last few years are at work, but as far as I can easily tell, the previous early date for the Grand Canyon region was 16 March.

There was also a Black-throated Sparrow at Paria Beach, several Blue-gray Gnatcatchers at Lees Ferry and Lonely Dell, a Black Phoebe at Lees Ferry, and quite a few Say's Phoebes.  Ducks are beginning to thin out, but there were still quite a few.

We saw singing males at Hermit Camp and Monument Creek in the Canyon this weekend. They seem to be back early en masse this year.

While on the low end of the bell curve, these records are not off the charts. There are late February records for Page Spgs and Tavasci Marsh and Mar 10-15 is about typical for FOS.

The Full Worm Moon on 12 Mar might have boosted the passage of early birds.

Aren't Lucy's Warblers kind of know for the way they show up suddenly in the spring in mid March all across their range?  Even in southeastern Utah that show up at this time.

It looks like the earliest date I had them at Holbrook was March 28 (2010), as far as records I've entered into eBird so far (there may be some in old lists I still need to enter). Other sightings I've had of Lucy's Warbler in spring on the Colorado Plateau were from early April through early May at Holbrook, Springerville, and Pinetop-Lakeside. Besides the breeding population in southeast UT/southwest CO, several years ago someone (Dave Stejskal?) had them in summer at Canyon de Chelly National Monument near Chinle.
