Flagstaff Rose-breasted Grosbeak
Quite a treat to look out the window this morning and see this at my feeder:

This is the second RBGR in my yard, the first being a female last June.

Very nice!

Could you send him over to my West Side yard? There are good treats for him there, as well.

The bird is still hanging around, 23 April, and coming into my feed sporadically and on no apparent schedule. For a while this morning it was alternating turns at the feeder with my first-of-year Black-headed Grosbeak (a good looking male).

After not seeing the Rose-breasted Grosbeak since 29 April, I'd assumed it had moved on. Today, 7 May, there is a male RBGR back in my yard. I suppose it's most likely the same individual continuing, but it's hard to rule out this being a second bird. The peak spring passage of Rose-breasted Grosbeaks above the Rim is May 15-20.

Jason,

Someone on ebird reported seeing a Rose-breasted Grosbeak near Elden Spring on May 7. He included a photo.

His description: Sitting up on bare snag. Unmistakable male with rosy breast patch with black head, very light bill, very white underparts, underside of tail white in middle and black on edges. About 200m east of spring at 11:30am.

I made a brief effort to find the bird to no avail.

I'll bet this is your bird.

Maybe he is taking residence around the spring area? Maybe looking for a love in all the wrong places?

I saw that, Gary. Interestingly, that is about the same time the bird showed up in my yard. It only stayed briefly in my neck of the woods, and I'm very close to Elden Spring, so I bet it was the same bird. It hasn't been back since, so I'm really not sure whether to conclude I've had one or two males RBGRs in my yard this spring.

RE: Flagstaff Rose-breasted Grosbeak
there seems to be enough variation in individual RBGRs that you could likely resolve the question of how many birds if you got another photo?

You're probably right, Brian, if only I had gotten a photo of the bird during its brief appearance on May 7...
No sign of it since.

And someone has another at his house in Doney Park this week too. I'll ask him to post it here.
