Common Crane at Mormon Lake
Roger Sleeper texted me this morning about finding a Common Crane at the NW corner of Mormon Lake.

I dashed out with several birders and had fine looks
at the bird.

WelI documented and seen by several people so far.

All the photos posted to eBird from 2016 are Sandhill. That said, there was a brief time period when reports were coming to eBird of 2 Sandhill Cranes. This was never substantiated with a photo.

There are reports of people trying to get closer and flushing the bird.

PleaseI don't do that.

RE: Common Crane at Mormon Lake
1. at least 6 of us from the verde valley saw the COMMON CRANE in the time frame 1030 to 1 or so.
2. the bird flew often, flew strongly, had no bands on legs, etc. it was all over the lake from nw to sw to s to se.
3. yes some folks were walking out to get closer, but it seemed to just fly on it's own - we did not see anyone get anywhere close enough to cause it to fly.
4. we did not see a little blue heron or a laughing gull. now there were some sleeping black headed gulls far away that we assumed were franklin's, but did not see them even close to well enough to eliminate laughing.

I saw the Common Crane yesterday morning (May 5) at about 10:00 am at the crane stakeout location in the northwest part of the lake. I want to thank Jason Wilder for his timely report of this fantastic bird on the Arizona listserve, and I also want to thank Tom Linda for letting me look through his scope. We have a terrific community of birders here in Arizona.

I don't know where my original text went, so here is the gist:

I saw the crane in the usual spot. It flew in about 8:55 AM and was still there when I left at 11:30 AM.

I also explored the woods and fields around the area.

There was a nice set of birds around:

Jim Logan reports finding the crane today at 2:30.

After a lengthy search, he found it in the NW corner.

Some people have actually missed the bird.

We saw the Common Crane this morning about 8:45. We watched it forage for about 30 minutes. Eventually, it took off and a group of us watched it circle higher and higher until it finally headed north on the brutal wind.

RE: Common Crane at Mormon Lake
The crane was in its usual location yesterday, 11 May, in the flooded grasses south of the pulloff between Dairy and Double Springs.

In the same general area, but farther away, there was a small mudbar hosting two Ring-billed Gulls, two American Avocets, two Black-bellied Plovers, and one Marbled Godwit. Also extremely far out, toward the Village, was a scattered flock of phalaropes.

For those with scopes and the will to count, please don't give up on keeping count of the other birds on the lake! I was just perusing eBird checklists and the ebb and flow of different species is really interesting. I was particularly blown away by the Eared Grebes - I estimated 340 - but noticed that going back as recently as a few days there didn't seem to be any out there (?) - yesterday they were certainly acting like they were going to breed.

Good birding,

May 12,2017 I observed the Common Crane at the west end of lake in the grassy wetlands. It was for about 2 hours starting at 1 pm. Spectacular sighting 2 other birders joined me. We had good binoculars and spotting scope. I did get video of the Crane flying too. Still on a bird high from seeing this rare out of the area bird. The closer you get to it he's goes further away.

The crane was present this morning at 10:45am. It continues to the south of the pullout that is between Dairy Springs and Double Springs campgrounds. It was still in the same area when I left an hour later.

I wonder if the reported sandhill was really the Common Crane?!  From the distance the bird is from the viewing areas it could easily been mistaken for a Sandhill.

The Common Crane was easily located today in the SW corner of the lake nearer to the village.
