Evening Grosbeaks, Yard 10/20/17
This past weekend, I thought I heard Evening Grosbeaks calling in the distance when I was in my yard. I could not confirm by sight, however.

My wife just called me at work and said that there were several in the yard this morning.

I hope to confirm this sometime in the next couple of days (if they stick around).

Red Crossbills were flying over my yard in good numbers this morning (east Flagstaff).
Seems pretty finch-y out there!

Evening Grosbeaks, 3-4, have been visiting my water bath in east Flagstaff for a few days.  Cassin's Finches and crossbills about, yes, it is quite finchy.  Also Cedar Waxwings in various places around town.

Our backyard in University Heights has been loaded with finches the past week or so.  Lot of  Pine Siskins, as many as four Cassin's Finches, a few House Finches, and as many as 31 Evening Grosbeaks. There have been very few Lesser Goldfinches but just 1.5 miles from here on the NAU South Campus they are very common.  I'd love to have some Red Crossbills stop by. I've only seen them maybe twice in the yard.

Well, I finally saw the Evening Grosbeaks in my yard on Saturday morning. There were 4 of them. Sunday there were 12.

Cassin's Finches went from 6 last weekend to 40+ this weekend!

Also present were Brown Creeper, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Pine Siskin (16), and a Coopers Hawk that caught a Eurasian Collared Dove. coming back to my yard a couple of hours later and proceeded to eat it near the top of a large pine.

My yard has been pretty much non-stop action all day long for the past 2 days...that's what I like!

Gary

PS. Now here is something that you do not see too often as a yard bird around here...I was watching all the activity in my chair, when out of nowhere this large, greenish, bright yellow bird flew right past me, out of my yard, and into a pine tree in the area behind my house. I quickly realized it was a parrot!

I managed to get a few pics of it. I have not had much time to research what kind it is, but if anyone out there knows, please let me know.

I wonder how long it can last in this fall extreme temperature environment in Flagstaff right now. Quite a nice yard bird!

The yellow bird looks like a Budgerigar (aka Parakeet) to me. It is a common cage bird.

UPDATE: One of our neighbors reported their pet parakeet had escaped. My wife contacted her, and she has put its cage in our backyard, hoping that it might return and get in it. She even sat in our yard at lunch yesterday and played parakeet calls on her ipad.

I am not that hopeful that we will ever see the bird again, but, with birds, you never know...some hope is better than none...
