Type 5 Crossbills
Yesterday while hiking in Lee Canyon about 10 miles south of Desert View, I heard a couple Red Crossbills that did not sound like they typical Type 2 birds. I got a recording, and emailed it to the crossbill experts in the recent ebird article about crossbill types. Turns out that they were Type 5 (Lodgepole Pine) crossbills.

Thanks to Lauren Harter for converting my WAV file into a spectrogram.

We also enjoyed numerous roadrunner tracks as well as a Golden Eagle, Red-tailed Hawk, Clark's Nutcrackers, Townsend's Solitaires, and many Pinyon Jays.
