Havasu Laughing Gull, Kittiwake a no show
Today 14 Jan, Lauren Harter and I joined Michael and Roger Woodruff, Tom Benson, Brittany O'Connor, Captain Brad Singer, Matt Grube, Bill Deppe, and Adam Jackson in taking a boat around Lake Havasu. As the group was California birders the goal was to try and chum the kittiwake onto the California side. However, despite repeated visits to Site Six (as well as some checking yesterday evening) and checking nearby areas, we saw no sign of the kittiwake so it appears it has moved on. After spending a while on the California side of the lake we cruised by Windsor Beach with a gull flock and suddenly Brittany was calling out an interesting gull with a black bill, at first we were hoping it was the kittiwake, but when the bird banked around into good light the call of LAUGHING GULL (1st cycle) quickly rang out! Despite many attempts at trying to lure it towards California, the bird wasn't interested in following the gull flock for that long and really stuck to "Site 4" at the south end of Windsor Beach (the State Park) as well as the entrance to the channel.

Also of interest was a Mexican Duck in the channel and 2 rare in winter Bonaparte's Gulls. On the California side, we had a female Barrow's Goldeneye (rare away from the Bill Williams Arm of the lake) and a Red-throated Loon. Though we missed them on the boat there is an ebird report of the continuing 5 Surf and a White-winged Scoter off Pittsburgh Pt. Good birding.

RE: Havasu Laughing Gull, Kittiwake a no show
BB Oros and I drove to Lake Havasu yesterday hoping for Laughing Gull, and with any luck the Kittiwake.

We checked Site Six first but found only RBGU, a Common Loon and a few coots.

I contacted Lauren and she suggested the state park and here I scoped a likely suspect off in the distance to the south. We lost the bird for a bit, but to our utter surpise, it landed in front of us, joining a group of RBGU about 50 feet away for great views and fotos.

Thanks to Lauren for the assist.
Tom
