American Dipper - Cave Springs
My wife Susan and I stopped at Cave Springs yesterday on our way down to the Verde Valley. Overall, there were very few birds out. There were 8 GBHE working on their nests in the large ponderosa pines just downstream from the road. I was hopeful that we'd see the Dipper but I wasn't thinking we'd find it as soon as we did. It was on the immediate upstream side of the bridge. For several minutes we watched it go completely under water and come up with something in its mouth. It would go up on the angled buttresses of the bridge and smack what it had in its mouth on the bridge. We initially thought they were very small fish but we noticed that it appeared to be eating some type of larvae and, by smacking them on the bridge, was able to get them out of their protective "shell".  After getting home and taking a closer look at our photos, we could faintly make out the segmented body of the larvae and two "tail" looking features. It looks a bit like a damselfly. Anybody familiar with these things?

Not current on underwater bugs; there is at least one that glues glues little pieces of things around it for protection.  Stone fly pops to mind, but probably not.

better ask a fly fisherman. mayflies are rather elegant with a split tail, but I'm not sure what the nymphs look like...

I investigated.  It is Caddis Fly, not Stone Fly or MayFly.

Thanks Roger! That Dipper was really enjoying them.
