Gambel's quail
Today while riding my bike into work, imagine my surprise when a male Gambel's quail darted across the road in front of me in University Heights!  I assume escaped captive?

Also saw a roadrunner about two months ago in the neighborhood.

FOS lazuli bunting, black-headed grosbeak, and brown-headed cowbird this weekend at my backyard feeders.

That's pretty cool! I'd never considered that people might have captive Gambel's Quail.

I remember a report many years ago about a pair of Gambel's Quail seen along the urban trail north of Frances Short Pond.

RE: Gambel's quail
At my former home on the Southside (a few blocks north of campus) we had a male Gambel's Quail in the yard 8 times during the late Spring-to-midSummer period in 2007, feeding under a bird feeder and often roosting in a shrub overnight. A year or two ago, we saw a Gambel's Quail along the urban trail near Willow Bend. They were presumed escaped birds.

Thew AZ Breeding Bird Atlas notes numerous locations north of the rim where GAQU have been noted in fluctuating populations, including Leupp and Winslow. I've recorded them while surveying in the Red Lake to Valle area. Given their popularity as a game bird and occurrence both east and west of Flagstaff, perhaps it's not a big surprise?

By the way, you can have your very own Gambel's Quail for the princely sum of $3.15.

A bargain at twice the price.
