Meteor Crater: Hermit X Townsend's hybrid
A cooperative warbler at Meteor Crater today, 16 September, has characteristics that make it appear to be a hybrid between Hermit and Townsend's Warbler, or perhaps a backcross individual. The lack of yellow on the underparts, yellow eye ring and overall appearance suggest Hermit, while the dark auricular patches and smudgy streaks on the sides suggest some Townsend's genes are present too.  These hybrids are apparently pretty common, and Townsend's Warblers seem to be expanding their range into Hermit-dominated areas:

Other than the hybrid, birds were few today, but diversity was high, with warblers including MacGillivray's, Orange-crowned, Nashville, Wilson's, Townsend's, Yellow, and the hybrid. A few silent "Western" Flycatchers were fun to study.
