Las Vegas Bird ID Help
I spotted this bird at the "Jean Lawn Patch", in Jean Nevada, half way between Las Vegas & Prim on 10/19/18.

It was hanging out with a female Red-winged Blackbird.

My best guess is some type of female Bunting, but I have never seen one this dark brown (almost black) before.

Any help with the ID would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Gary

Gary, I think this is a female Brown-headed Cowbird, showing once again that they can be kind of cool looking.

Ok, thanks Tom.

That was another species I had considered...you are right, that sure is a pretty one!

RE: Las Vegas Bird ID Help
By the way, for those who may be looking for a place to bird on your next trip to Las Vegas, the Jean Lawn Patch has a local reputation for attracting rarities like Painted Bunting and various eastern Warblers. Unfortunately, I did see any rare birds on my visit, but there were a lot of sparrows, juncos, and a few warblers around.
Directions from Vegas:

I-15 South towards Primm. Exit Hwy 161 (Goodsprings Rd.), Jean, NV,  go left on Goodsprings Rd. this turns in Main St.

The Shell station (1 Main St.) is at Main St. & Las Vegas Blvd. on left, the Gold Strike Casino (check Casino grounds) is on the right.

*Check grasses on both sides of Main St.

It is literally a patch of grass and weeds through a row of trees in the casino parking lot, near the casino entrance.

One thing that I noticed is, that for some strange reason, the casino still has a sprinkler system that waters this patch of weeds. Of course, this water creates puddles that attract birds, as well (especially in this barren, desert habitat).

Not much to look at, but apparently, birds love it!
