Page Springs 2/23/19
I was feeling kind of lazy, not wanting to go in the cold out yesterday morning, but I decided to go to Page Springs anyway.

I am glad that I did. Lots of bird activity.

The drive down revealed that the entire Verde Valley was covered in snow.

There are now 2 Common Blackhawks hanging out around the fish hatchery side.

Many species were singing and putting on nice shows, providing good photo opportunities, but perhaps the best moment was a male Ruby-crowned Kinglet that landed in a bush a few feet away.

He was displaying his bright red ruby crown and decided to start grooming himself remaining in one place for over a minute.

I snapped dozens of photos of this bird, as this was a rare opportunity for me!

If finding a mate is based on the ruby crown alone, this bird should have not trouble finding one!

A full list of birds that I saw:

Thanks!

Yes, spring is on its way, but you wouldn't think so with all the snow on the ground!

Love the bluebird pic.
I went there too, looking for ANHU nests (since they were nesting last year on 10 Feb), but it was too frosty I think to trigger nest-building. No sign of the swallows present 2 weeks ago. I did note a pair of Lesser Goldfinch building a nest on 12 Feb. The male was carrying nesting material - the first time I have ever seen that. Temps are predicted to be in the mid-60's this week, so anticipate a burst of bird activity.

Roger,

I did see one Northern rough-winged Swallow last Friday (2/15/17) when I was there. I spent most of the day there but only saw the swallow in the afternoon.

2 swallows there again today. Also a Double-crested Cormorant and a Mountain Chickadee. Most of the ducks were absent - moved on? The creek is quite elevated - I imagine that eliminates most locations where ducks can loaf during the day. On the way home a pair of Canada Geese seemed to be shopping the pond adjacent to Cornville Rd at the Oak Cr bridge.
