Grass Flat Gulls
In good water years, the lake that forms at Grass Flat (, which lies just to the north of Mormon Lake, seems to consistently attract good numbers and diversity of gulls - and they allow much closer approach than birds on Mormon Lake. An early trip there this morning, 17 April, showed this to be the case, with 13 Ring-billed Gulls, 7 Franklin's Gulls and 2 Bonaparte's Gulls (one immature bird still in first-winter plumage and one adult in breeding plumage) all present. About 145 White-faced Ibis were visible as they flushed into the air over the main body of Mormon Lake (a Peregrine Falcon appeared responsible). Most years, a diversity of shorebirds can also be found at Grass Flat, though there were none there today.
