Grass Flat Gulls
In good water years, the lake that forms at Grass Flat (https://ebird.org/hotspot/L2742892), which lies just to the north of Mormon Lake, seems to consistently attract good numbers and diversity of gulls - and they allow much closer approach than birds on Mormon Lake. An early trip there this morning, 17 April, showed this to be the case, with 13 Ring-billed Gulls, 7 Franklin's Gulls and 2 Bonaparte's Gulls (one immature bird still in first-winter plumage and one adult in breeding plumage) all present. About 145 White-faced Ibis were visible as they flushed into the air over the main body of Mormon Lake (a Peregrine Falcon appeared responsible). Most years, a diversity of shorebirds can also be found at Grass Flat, though there were none there today.
